i came home yesterday and my water was so green and it had a smell like when you place hay in a bucket and leave it there with stagnent water...almost all the gold fish i put in the pond dead. i have netting over the top of the pond. im placing a shade over the pond just to see if that was the problem. i basicly drained the pond down to around my best guess 50 gallons and filled it back up. any opinions why it got so bad?

Probably not enough flow, the water had a lot of nutrients in it, and had lots of sunlight on it. Same thing happened to my pond but its a lot smaller, but same idea.

I checked your other thread for a pic and saw none so, did your pond have any type of filtration or water movement? Does it contain any type of plants.........lilies, oxygenators or floaters? How many fish and how often were you feeding?

Now, you do NOT need a pump or filtration for a pond to flourish but you do need to make sure you do not overcrowd with fish, do not overfeed the fish you do have and MAKE sure to add some floating plants, hyacynths or lettuce and some anacharis type plant for oxygen. The hyacynths will out compete the suspended algae for nutrients and thus the "green water" will not survive. I would only feed about 1-2 times a week, there are so many natural foods available your fish couldn't starve if they wanted to. Even if you do run a pump and filter box, stick to this plan and you will have a crystal clear and healthy pond all summer. Try not to add any chemicals at all, most are unneccessary and only add to the problem.

Any more probs or ???, don't hesitate to ask!

since the last time i was in here i had drained the pond and scrubbed the hell out of it . i also left the lid off the filter box and placed a sheet of plastic at the bottom with holes drilled in it. placed plants in holes as a live filter so far water has been crystal clear. ill get some pics up
