If your pond is large, I would concur w/ the Chinese high-fin loach/shark,
Myxocyprinus asiaticus. They get large though, as attested to in this article:

Misgurnis anguillicadatus, is another temperate water species:

Pimephales promelas, in my pond. They're commonly sold as "rosy reds" at LFS and are often used as feeders or bait fish.
In southern CA, you could also get away with some semi-tropical species like white cloud mountain minnows (
Tanichthys albonubes), paradisefish (
Macropodus opercularis), Buenos Aries tetras (
Hemigrammus caudovittatus), or true Texas cichlids (
Herichthys cyanoguttatus).
