Got a 55 gallon tank for real cheap but came with a free fish. Turns out it was a snake head, not sure what kind but I didnt want it. Not about to keep an illegal fish in my house. I did not want to just kill it or set it free so I had to do the honerable thing and eat it. This time I just put a bunch of ice in the water to knock it out. Then just whacked it a few times and started gutting it. Lots of scales, and the scales are very tough. Not alot of guts, unlike the pacu. That thing was all stomach. wow, this fish has lots of meat. No wonder the folks in south east asia eat these fish. Took a while but all done. I have to admit, these SH's taste very good. Lots of meat, and very tender. I have never had fish like this before. The only thing is it has lots of bones. I have to do this again, anyone have a SH you want to get rid of?

QUOTE(akira @ Mar 24 2008, 02:04 PM) BTW, eating any fish has some danger elements to it.
I just love the thrill I get from eating fish, it's like living on the edge man... or that could just be the mercury. BTW, for food fish I recomend hitting the fish over the head to knock it out, cutting the base of the spine if your filiting it, then cutting some of the gill arches to bleed it out. This helps ensure that the fish dosen't magicaly spring back to life after a few minutes and also helps get rid of any funky flavors. Good for you and good for the fish . Also, you can insert a knife under the operculum and poke through the body to the other side and cut from top to bottom, you will cut through the heart and bleed it out that way. This is good for fish with really beefy arches or to help bleed them out faster.

WTF man, you know how hard it is to get SH's here. I can't believe you cooked and ate something that we would all gladly keep in one of our tanks. Thats just jacked man. Seriously though bro, you know there are plenty of folks who would have taken it. Whats this whole fish murdering fetish you got going? There are plenty of other sources of fish to eat without raiding people's aquariums. Hell, its one thing to kill and eat a fish that no one wants but I am positive that this one could have found a good home. You give us fish owners a bad name man.
