Obviously only interested in the people who currently own Umbee. This does not reflect the tank you "will get" in the future. It also does not mean a large tank full of cichlids, since that means they will have to be relocated at some point during your adult Umbee's life. A little common sense...if you have a couple fish that you are going to move...that counts.
A while back someone suggested getting more information on owning Umbee. Lets start with cold hard facts and see what;s already out there. Answer honestly and lets see what kind of picture this paints.
Peace.

Here's my question... Did you have in your possession all the tanks needed for your fish when fully grown BEFORE you bought them?
Cichlidscene had his in a 90g until what 11" or so? And then even when full grown it went into 200g(IMO too small). Is he a bad fishkeeper?
2.5" dovii 2.5" umbie , 3" umbie , 4.5" umbie

No. Cichlidscene is one of the top aquarists in the country. He also owned a 340 gallon tank while the fish was growing and could have moved it there at any time. He also recently sold the Umbee knowing that it was in need of more space and got top dollar. I believe it's going into a 900 gallon tank. What does that tell you? You have obviously seen the fish. What do you think. Now here's my question...beyond knowing the size of the tank...it's bigger than that BTW...do you have any idea what kind of maintenance he had to do weekly? The diet? I'm not going to debate it here. It's way off topic. This post has been edited by MoJo: Mar 7 2006, 06:53 PM

If the 500 I am getting in the fall is not big enouh I could always have one in the pond I am building.

Overall, do you believe a 300 gallon tank is not enough space for an adult? I have a 180 with a single (6 in) umbee. I feel this tank size is enough for the umbee, however, when it get over 9 I truly feel it’s my responsibility to move him in a larger tank if not sooner. The only reason I have not purchased the tank is because I have not yet found a tank/dealer/location/style worth a lick. I hope to purchase one buy May I have both the desire and the resources. Overall, I glad I’m waiting and researching. Do you think people are not meeting the min requirements? Afterall, what are the min requiements for a 2 4 5 6 8 20 in umbee.

Although this doesn't exactly reflect upon the thread's purpose, could you elaborate on the maintenance and diet? I've never had a large umbie but I would like to know what kind of special care it required.

I do two 50% water changes per week and feed a varied diet consisting of a rotation of several types of hi-protein pellets ,shrimp pellets, small frozen (thawed) whole fish and (thawed) frozen shrimp twice a day. I keep mine in 60x30x30 tanks 2 per tank with a divider down the middle. In this enviroment I keep 4 larger ones 6-12 inches long. It is my dream to grow my largest one to a giant size and put him in one of the big tanks. I am interested in your comment about the diet. Can you think of anything I could be doing to improve my husbandry methods?

Hi Guys I have just bought 4 small Umbies at about 1.5 inch TL - at the moment they are housed in a 48x18x30" tank. They have about 60 Geophagus Fi species that I bred in with them at about 2" TL.
I bought the Umbies as a trial (long term) housing to see howthey would be as tank mates with some large Crenicichla !!
My larger tank, which house the pikes are mostly 72x24x24" -of which I have6 tanks - with two more to come.
I am feeding the fish on general fish foos, granular, home made prawn mix etc etc. The tank is well filtered, and they get water changes every other day of 10% or slightly more. Ive never kept Umbies before, but I have and do keep a lot of Crenicichla and eartheaters, so have you anything for me on them
I propose that in about a month they will be too large for that tank, and they will be moved into one of the 6 foots Graham
