Here's my disclaimer from the prior thread: QUOTE Here's a USGS published map of states prohibiting the possession of live snakeheads as of November 2002:
States Prohibiting Possession of Live Snakeheads - Nov. 2002
Since that time and the federal ban on importation and interstate transport, several other states, including Maryland (home of the Crofton pond where C. argus was discovered), have added Channidae to their list of prohibited species. Feel free to chip in if your state has added snakeheads to its list of regulated species. Thanks.

QUOTE(beblondie @ May 16 2005, 11:39 AM) Heres the one I know of State laws: The following states have laws, or have proposed laws on the table banning the possession, sale of Snakeheads: Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Michigan, Maryland, New Jersey, Indiana, Kansas, North Carolina,Virginia, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Tennessee,Ohio*,New york,Hawaii and supposedly Ontario Canada Thanks, Anne! Based on that info, the following states should be added to the USGS map: 1) Hawaii 2) Indiana 3) Kansas 4) Maryland 5) Michigan 6) New Jersey 7) New York 8) Ohio 9) Oklahoma I'm not sure what color though, because that depends on whether any legal violations have been reported. In the absence of data, I'll have to assume that they're tan states, indicating that possession is illegal but no reported violations have occurred. Incidentally, because Channa have been illegal in CA for several decades, I've never kept Channa nor do I keep up to date on state regulation of Channa, so I really appreciate everyone's input. *is painfully aware of the preceding run-on sentence*

QUOTE(Serygo @ May 16 2005, 05:02 PM) I am still waiting to hear from the Fish and Wildlife, or whoever handles that for Oregon, to see if were added to the illegal states... According to the November 2002 map, Oregon prohibits snakeheads. It's in tan, which means that snakeheads are prohibited but no legal violations have been reported. Also, you can access the entire list of Oregon's prohibited species in my pinned thread on prohibited species lists: Prohibited Species ListsIn fact, here's the Oregon post: Oregon Prohibited SpeciesWaterwolves -- we have the info, but sometimes you have to dig for it.

QUOTE(Serygo @ May 17 2005, 04:39 PM) icthyophile- In that list.... theres only one thing that is incorrect... Piranhas are able to be kept in tanks... The law going agianst it,,, did not go through, but they are still trying to ban them. The regulatory language appears to be consistent with your assertion. Three piranha genera are excluded from the list per the following language: QUOTE (i) Piranha or Caribe - Characidae subfamily Serrasalminae - All species and hybrids except Serrasalmus, Pygocentrus and Pristobrycon pursuant to ORS 498.242 and OAR 635-011-0160(2);

 I still wish that I could get some Channa bleheri. How many fish could a 8" or 9" adult fish eat in a lake anyway. Let's stock a lake with Channa micropeltes and have a snakehead masters fishing tournament. They stocked largemouth bass everywhere else in the world.

It's Legal to keep snakeheads in South Dakota?
It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars and so on -- whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man -- for precisely the same reasons.

QUOTE(ALaake @ May 7 2006, 01:22 AM) I thought snakeheads were banned throughout the entire US?
If not then where are they LEGAL? It seems that would be easier to ask than where they are illegal.......
They are banned from transportation, selling, and trading throughtout the whole US. BUt some states allow you to keep fish yo ualready had b4 the legacy act.
