Burmese Trout...

I'd seen pics of these guys before and was in awe of the size of their mouth, had never seen them in person before. During one of my LFS cruising days I found three different tanks full of them at three different stores. I bought one and killed it within 2 or 3 days...ich. When I went back the first store only had one left, it was the same story at the second and third store as well...one fish had killed all of it's brothers and sisters in less then a week ohmy.gif

I got this one and have managed not to kill it and it actually seems to be doing pretty well, has grown about an inch per month, maybe a little less. It eats everything but is clearly designed to eat large items, and it will, I like feeding it silversides, seems like it can eat one almost as big as itself smile.gif

There are not alot of fish that will cohab with these guys, they're very, very aggressive and yet slender and easy to swallow so if you try one have a backup plan, I've had to move him three times now.

They're supposed to get about a foot long

I will get a yawn shot someday, the mouth is incredible

I saw two of them about 12" a while ago at my LFS, at the time I was buying my Dorado's so couldn't house one. They were seperated and the store guy had said they were trying to kill each other. I have been looking for one again now for some time now. Very active and impresive fish. Great find Norbert.

Got them in the store.. Very aggressive to other burmese trouts and other top swimmers...and especially during feeding. Had to feed these guys 3 times a day to keep them from fighting..eventually I had to seperate them

They have to be impressive at that size! To be honest I don't think I'll keep him much longer, I think it's going to end up being one of those fish that will need to be in solitary confinement permanently and I have enough solo fish tanks as it is. I'll raise him up a little bigger and try him with my RTGG, Marble Goby and Mahseer.

Strange fish, I had to remove the mag-float algae scraper in his tank because he suffered some kind of psychotic break and would bite it over and over for hours at a time unsure.gif you could hear a little squeek every time he bit it, weirdo fish

It's a shame. Similar to me you only have so many tanks and it's a shame to have all off them with a single fish. They did look good. I would think you would get a similer look and activity with out the aggression with some of the larger Barilius.

My Barca attacks the class cleaner aswell.

I would love a Mahseer. Don't know a great deal about them. Are there any smaller species?

Yeah it is a shame but I was just reading about the Burmese Trout on Fishbase and all may not be lost..."One of the most delicious fish in Nepal" chef.gif

I've been looking for some of the larger Barilius but haven't found any yet...I have a shoal of a smaller Barilius...I think it's a B. vagra, but not positive. Sorry for crap pic, they hate the flash and go to the back of the tank as soon as I come anywhere near the tank.

I don't know alot about the different Mahseer either, I just picked up a trio sold as Tor douronensis, I think they are some of the smaller ones but not positive about that. Per fishbase only 35cm, no idea yet how accurate that is though.

Kept a few in the past in a largish community tank with other semi aggressive fish. The LFS only had 3 of them so I kept them with some Luciosoma setigerum. It worked well for the few months I had them. Got rid of them to make space for a bowfin. They never got past 5 inches when I had them, so compatibility at larger sizes might be different. Awesome fish though, would definitely buy more if I came across them again.

Hadn't seen that thread before, thanks for the link...that was a top notch collection you had/have, love the color of your congicus, the sleeper and watercow are awesome and that raiamas is the species I really want, primarily because it's from Africa biggrin.gif

Nah, took him back to a LFS...I just don't have room for anymore solo fish and I wasn't having any luck keeping him with anyone.

In Thailand, R.guttatus is rarely to keep in aquarium,he's so aggressive and not grow over 1 FT.Just 10 inches is so biggest I've ever seen. You can keep with others except bigger predator justlike snakehead, perch or bass and etc can swallow smaller its mouth.I keep it with H.vittatus bigger than R.guttatus a little. Please keep it more than one ,trust me .Because some places rarely seen in Thailand.

Excuse me,I forgot .R.guttatus have black upper and lower lobe on caudal fin.Would you mind how much for this fish? Please mail to me sorn133@hotmail.com

I've seen large specimen terrorized similar sized tigerfishs and Pacific tarpons in a shop. Some mid-size to large specimens can get orangish to reddish fins and orange or coppery head. As for size:
