Anyone done it? Or does anyone have pictures...pics would be great. I am thinking about trying it out. I have already been warned by T that they are pretty difficult to cross though.

I don't even see how its possible...they aren't even remotely similar. At least texas, guatopes and the like are some what similar to Cons when they are cross bred. I dunno if it will work out bro...be kewl lookin though. Best of luck to yaz!

I had a whole tank full of FiremouthXBloodparrots. If they can spawn with BP's I don't see why they couldn't spawn with Con's.

I would think most central american cichlids could interbreed.

I don't know if most Centrals can interbreed. There are hundreds of different species and I'll admit I haven't kept alot of them so I can't make such a general statement.

Firemouths are South American though tongue.gif

Ironically enough, our Firemouth laid the eggs and our Convict sealed the deal! I had no idea they would do this since they have been at each other’s throats since we got them about 8 months ago. huh.gif So I figured I would try to save a few... somehow I managed to siphon about 50 from the big tank into a baby tank. Attached is a picture of them I took about 2 weeks ago. They are growing REALLY fast, but even at 1/3 of an inch long now – I can’t tell what they are going to look like…

Do fish, when they interbreed like this, retain their species' traits or do they mix? I would be intrested to hear anyone's guess on what they will look like.

Oh, by the way, two weeks after they laid their first batch, they did it again…. blink.gif I can't keep up so they became a part of tank's food chain. I think this is going to be a recurring thing with them.

Hey Bigfish333, Here are some pics of my Firemouth/Convict hybrid. The Mom was the Firemouth. We kept two and they are male/female - but do not mate. This is the boy (thus the hump). They are about 1 year old now. Sorry about the quality of pics - still learning how to use my digital. They are really quite colorful! smile.gif

Thanks! They are about 4" (including tail). Not too big - but where they do pack the punch is they have the combined attitude of the Firemouth and the Convict. mad.gif The boy is especially a challenge - he likes to terrorize everyone else in the tank! ohmy.gif

SICK!!! That thing is awesome. I like the trailers on the fins and the hump of a convict on the head of a firemouth. Very cool hybrid. I hope you kept all the survivers to yourself though. Have your con and FM bred again since this batch?

cool.gif They did mate a few more times, but we didn't interfere. We ended up having to separate them. Every time they would breed, the Convict would beat everyone else in the tank up. We put him in a tank with our Managuense and they ended up having babies together too! After those two did it - we ended up finding a new home for the Convict. blink.gif He would mate with any female around!

DON"T SELL THEM TO A PET STORE!!! I know this is the hybrid section but... nobody wants these mixes floating around in the market. It does nothing but confuse the bloodlines. It's hard enough buying a pure fish in a LFS without getting some frankenfish that ends up in the freezer.

I couldn't agree more! Breed them if you must, but please don't put them on the market.
